Indiana University identifies classes, such as "human movement, athletic training, emergency care, physical fitness, conditioning, and adapted physical education" (2005) in addition to educational psychology and methods courses (Indiana University, 2005). PE teachers also need to know about child and adolescent physical development (Indiana University, 2005). Individuals wanting to teach physical education must be licensed or certified for teaching in the state where they intend to teach (North Carolina Central University, 2005; Ball State University, 2005; Indiana University, 2005). The salary of this teacher will depend on the school district in which they teach. Entry level teachers in North Carolina generally earn between $23,000 and $33,000 per year, depending on the district (North Carolina Central University, 2005). In Indiana, the average salary for PE teachers is $24,700, which includes coaching (Indiana University, 2005). Each school district in the United States has their own salary schedule that increases with experience and additional training. Physical education teachers, however, work the same week as all other teachers in the school, with some possible exceptions.
