to assert that a material substance was the cause of all natural phenomena (Thales, 2004). More specifically, Thales contended that water was the universal material matter of all beings
and all cosmic phenomena (Thales, 2004). However, Thales was not just a philosopher (Thales, 2004). He was also a great mathematician and historian, and in this way influenced
a great deal of science (Thales, 2004). In fact, Thales is considered the first astronomer and even predicted an important eclipse (Thales, 2004). There were other "firsts" as
well (Thales, 2004). For instance, Thales was the first to declare the immortality of the soul and was the first to "determine the suns course from solstice to solstice"
(Thales, 2004). Thales is also credited with providing the first attempts of measurement for the sun and moon respectively (Thales, 2004). In this way, Thales is considered the
first Western philosopher because he brought a wealth of new ideas to the people and introduced new ways of perceiving reality (Eklor, 2003). Furthermore, it was these ideas
that began to lay the groundwork for science, medicine, theology, and many other disciplines (Eklor, 2003). Thales was very metaphysical
in his approach, believing in a grand truth beyond our own reality (Eklor, 2003). By determining the basic component of life, Thales was not only creating his personal
philosophy but also his spiritual reality as well (Eklor, 2003). From his time forward science has been trying to reduce the universe to a basic elements (or elements),
and in this way it is apparent that Thales indeed played an important role in how future scientists and philosophers would search for the Grand Unified Theory (Eklor, 2003).
