would hardly hire a philosopher to sit in an office for example. There are of course New Age gurus, who are philosophers of sorts, and they make plenty of money,
but that is largely due to the fact that they resell old philosophic concepts in new packages. Of course, in a way, much in the realm of philosophy is repeated
over and over again throughout the centuries. To an extent, there can only be so many thoughts, so many paradigms and so many belief systems. In examining the purpose of
philosophy, it seems that there are many. Certainly, philosophic questions plague mankind and ethical and moral thought--something viewed as extremely important in every age--has a basis in philosophy.
Of course, it is not easy to pin down what philosophy is anyway. Honderich (1995) writes: "Most definitions of philosophy are fairly controversial" (666). Even the experts cannot decide exactly
what philosophy is. A student submits the following quote for speculation: "It is the function of philosophy to understand all, even religion." Indeed, it seems that within the context
of philosophy, there is a wrestling with religious thought, because it is from the rejection of religion that philosophy did spring. Surprisingly, philosophy does not outright reject religion, and in
many ways it accepts the concept of God or at least the idea that a God-like entity exists. It was during the period of the Enlightenment that there was much
interest in philosophical ideas. During the Enlightenment period, new ideas about how society should be organized were introduced. Although some ideals have been incorporated into modern American society,
