The purpose of the baby as an example is to use a subject that is entirely innocent, and therefore not perhaps subject to some sort of retribution for past sins. Johnson asserts that God could not allow such a thing to occur, and therefore there must be no God. Johnson explores the many rebuttals of the theists who provide a variety of possible explanations on behalf of God. First and foremost, Johnson refutes the notion of the theist that the baby will go to heaven. Johnson contends that the logic to support this is implausible. Either the baby had to suffer or it did not. If it did not, then God is reprehensible. If it did have to suffer, what could possibly be the reason. Therefore, Johnson concludes that God either does not exist or is evil based upon this illogical premise. However, the theist could respond to Johnson by asserting that the baby would indeed go to heaven, not as justification for burning in the fire however. In other words, to the theist these two elements are not inherently intertwined with one another. The baby did burn in the fire and the baby will go to heaven according to the theist, but this is not a cause-and-effect situation. Even if the baby had died peacefully in its sleep it would go to heaven. Heaven is the right of the child despite what happens through the course of free-will on earth.
