access to many markets, including the Asian Tiger economies, that also includes Japan as well as the location of access to the Australasian markets.
To consider the Philippines as a destination for business we need to consider the countries nearby as well as the Philippines itself. The Philippines suffered in the 1998
currency crisis to a greater extent than other nearby countries, and received aid from its neighbours. Growth has been steady but rapid, at about 6% in 2004 (CIA, 2005). This
is low compared to other areas even with increased imports and exports. The current GDP is worth $430.6 billion n 2004, which equated
to $5,000 per capita. The major sector is services which make up 48% of the GDP, followed by industry which makes up 31.9% and then agriculture with only 14.8% (CIA,
2005). However, the labour force of 35.86 million is not as evenly spread. 36% work in agriculture, 48% in services and 16% n industry (CIA, 2005). The main exports
are electronic equipment, machinery, transportation, apparel, food, especially coconut products and fruit and vegetables, chemicals, and copper products. Main imports include raw materials machinery and equipment, fuels and vehicles, plastics,
grains chemicals. The unemployment rate is 11.4% for 2004 and 40% of the population live below the poverty line and inflation is
