Not unlike other industries that rely upon a positive bottom line to remain competitive, the pharmaceutical industry is faced with ever-mounting competition in this day of high medical costs and escalating insurance premiums. Staying within the industry edge is as much of a concern for the pharmaceutical companies as it is for any other conglomerate. "Theres some very exciting science going on, especially in genomics, that will have a dramatic impact on the industry over the next 10 years and over the next 20 years on our lives in terms of the diseases that can be treated" (Conklin, 1998, p. 6W). However, if the government has its way, imposed price controls will serve to significantly thwart the degree to which the pharmaceutical companies can continue to expand in business and address industry competitors. On the other hand, however, such tactics will also serve to protect the public against unnecessary price gouging. Marketing will become one of the primary focal points as a means by which the pharmaceutical industry can effectively overcome the barriers of government-imposed price controls. Business and marketing strategies for the pharmaceutical industry in general will reflect a need for simplicity and sensibility in order to effectively address "major needs" (Anonymous, 1997, p. PG). Consumers are becoming nonplussed, and therefore resistant, to all the elaborate marketing schemes found in todays marketing world.
