705% of the state revues and roughly 45% of the GDP (CIA, 2006). Despite many efforts to shift the emphasis of the economy there is still a heavy reliance in
the natural hydrocarbon resources. Saudi Arabia has large proven reserves of oil, this is estimated at around 261.9 billion barrels including the reserves in the areas between Saudi and
Kuwait known as the Neutral Zone where 2.5 million barrels are estimated (EIA, 2006). To put this in context this is about a quarter of the worlds proven reserves (EIA,
2006). About 66% of the reserves are of a light or extra light grade of oil, with the remaining oil reserving being either medium or heavy (EIA, 2006). There
is also a high level of concentration of oil in some area. There are currently more than 1,000 oil and gas wells located over about 80 different oil and gas
fields. However, it is in only eight fields that the majority of the oil is located, more than half of all the reserves are in these areas. One of these
oil fields is the largest oil field in the world; Ghawar, this onshore oil field alone has an estimated reserve of 70 billion barrels (EIA, 2006). The main production structure
is one of north to south starting at Ain Dar and Shedgum. The oil field alone produces more than 50% of the Saudi Arabian oil production taking up more than
