individuals will be promoted until they reach a position in which their performance is only
marginal - their "level of incompetence." Given today's hypercompetitive business environment,
organizations of all kinds and sizes are forced to operate more efficiently and need vision and
creativity from managers. They are unlikely to find those qualities in incompetent managers, and
that lack negatively affects the organization's bottom line while also damaging its competitive
