hands n operation that seeks to differentiate itself by developing new products and seeking to develop first mover advantages. In 1981 the development of DOS manifests when it is released
on an IBM computer and the first version of the well known operating system; Windows, is released in 1985. It is following this that the company goes public, with the
initial public offering taking place in 1986 with shares offered as $26 a share. The release was so successful that this was heralded as one of the most successful IPOs
of the decade (Microsoft, 2003). By 1989 there is an expansion and a version of office is released for the Macintosh computer, meaning that the market is developed from only
PCs. The development of software continues and in 1995 one of the best selling ever pieces of software was released; Windows 95
with more than 250 million sales (Microsoft, 2003). More than 1 million copies were sold in the first four days (Microsoft, 2003).
The company appeared to be very successful, but with success comes resentment and the well known anti-trust case that took place was the result of the company dominance and also
the policies in operation at the time. Looking at this it was inevitable that this would impact on the returns with the negative publicity.
