are a number of different "Americas," existing side by side but independent of each other. There is the America of the vastly wealthy, who live in unparalleled luxury. There is
the America of the very poor, who have formed a permanent "underclass" and whose very survival is at risk. And there is a sort of shadow society formed of illegal
aliens who work at the menial or difficult or dangerous jobs Americans dont want; who are often despised and denigrated; but without whom the economy would collapse. This paper argues
that illegal aliens should be granted amnesty. Discussion Granting amnesty to illegal aliens would mean that the United States has to stop dealing in fantasy and face reality: illegal immigrants
are here to stay and are a vital part of the economy. Furthermore, they are going to continue coming to the United States, especially from Mexico and Central and South
America because they can earn a far better living for their families than they can if they remain at home. When a very rich country exists contiguous to a much
poorer one, this sort of problem will invariably arise. The question is whether or not the American people are willing and able to recognize this reality, or if they are
