Much the same can be said about Nola Pender, completing a nursing degree in the early 1960s when there were virtually no doctoral programs devoted exclusively to nursing. At the time that Pender became interested in research, the health care pattern was that and individual became ill, sought the advice and care of a doctor and then set about healing again, regaining health. Prior to the Surgeon Generals warning on cigarettes in the mid-1960s, there was very little attention trained on preventive health care. It was Penders goal to change that perspective, hoping to alter the prevailing pattern to focus on prevention rather than on cures. Achieving this goal required astute observation of what existed at the time, followed by the application of activities that Pender believed would assist in changing attitudes about health care. The purpose here is to apply those same principles to education. The Pender Health Promotion Model Pender (n.d.) states that in her day of degree study there were no desirable nursing-oriented degree programs and she was forced to design her own. Her solution was to complete "a dual major doctoral degree in Psychology and Education in 1969" (Pender, n.d.a). She found psychological research to be rigorous and methodologically sound, and it "seemed that this preparation was most applicable to nursing as scientific knowledge in psychology could be used to help people restructure their cognitive world and their health behaviors" (Pender, n.d.a).
