Towards the latter part of the 1990s, a student explains that there had been a shift where South Africa was more willing to help in conflict resolution on the continent
as it thought it to be beneficial to them. Today, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is sent to peacekeeping missions throughout the continent. Of course, it is
not only internal desires of South Africa that plays a role in its participation. The international community also expects South Africa to play a role in peacekeeping since it did
attain a democracy (Malan, 1999). Since the 1990s, the SANDF had been involved in Africa at a higher rate ("The role," 2005). The military of South Africa did provide
election assistance such as air transport (UNAVEM II) for Angola and ONUMOZ in Mozambique (2005). Logistic support was provided for UNAVEM III at UN assembly areas in Angola (2005).
Burundi would also receive medical as well as humanitarian assistance and engineers also assisted the Angolan government (2005). It had done this in the form of training and de-mining
teams (2005). Through the years the SANDF also contributed much to humanitarian aid as it respects disaster stricken regions like Angola, Malawi, and Mozambique (2005). In delving through
the statistics, it does seem that contributions from South Africa have increased. Although the analysis is controversial, as some do not believe South Africa is doing enough, the statistics tell
