ABSTRACT As individuals in a democratic system, U.S. citizens pride themselves on certain
ideologies and personal rights that are afforded by that democracy. Among the most sacred of these are our views of equality and our personal privacy rights. With the
events that have unfolded in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center and the subsequent attacks on the U.S. Pentagon, however, we have witnessed
a significant percentage of such ideologies and rights erode away almost overnight. At the same time we have become exceptionally aware of the fact that our political boundaries are
no longer exempt from terrorist acts, an awareness that first began to emerge after the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and, as a point of interest, after the
subsequent bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma by one of our fellow Americans (Lindsey, Beach and Toigo, 2002). Consequently, our society has been more directly impacted not
just physically by terrorism and the resulting warfare but also psychologically than it has at any other point in history. The societal impacts
we have experienced in our country as a result of terrorism and the resulting warfare are many and diverse. Many revolve around the burden place on our society as
a world watchdog. Even before these direct attacks against us, however, the U.S. has played and will continue to play one of the most important roles in the abatement
