recent heated political issue is the secret wiretapping that is sanctioned by the president. People are truly upset over this issue. Bush claims that the new flexible rules are
necessary to close loopholes when it comes to counterterrorism efforts (Lichtblau & Risen, p.3). However, in reading the rules, it does seem as if they impede liberties that Americans
are supposed to have. What can the government do? One aspect of the Act is explained this way: "The National Security Letter provision of the PATRIOT Act allows the government
to demand, without court approval, records of people who are not suspected of any wrongdoing. Anyone who receives such a demand is prohibited from disclosing even the mere existence of
the request. According to news reports, the government issues thirty thousand National Security Letters every year" ("Is it legal?" 2007, p.24). It is hard to believe that the government is
now allowed to bypass constitutional protections and label an incident as terrorism in order to be able to use the strong arm of the law. At least, that is what
some people are afraid of as the government admits to no wrongdoing. Still, the Patriot Act does appear to be too strong and ironically, this law that is supposed to
uphold what America stands for actually chips away at guaranteed rights for all citizens. Not only do people complain, one organization has taken action. The ACLU has already waged a
lawsuit against the government due to the problems with the Act ("Patriot Act Challenge," 2006). Many citizens do not like the new changes that impede the freedoms that were fought
