On September 11, 2001 the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York had just disintegrated before our eyes as a result of a terrorist plane attack and even the Pentagon had been attacked. Just a few years earlier, in 1993, we had witnessed another attack on the Twin Towers as well. Americans and politicians alike were shocked at the terrorist potential. We had finally been awakened to the fact that our national boundaries were no longer exempt from terrorist attack. One of the results of that awareness was the Patriot Act. In theory, the Patriot Act is designed to protect our country and its citizens from repeats of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. In practice, the Patriot Act is an even more dangerous attack. It is an attack on the very premises upon which this country is founded. Section 15 of the Act technically allows representatives of the federal government to: "march into libraries to demand records of books that targeted individuals have checked out...to inspect records held by third parties, financial records, travel records, medical records, library records, without the knowledge or consent of the targeted individual". (Robinson, 2003).
