when its applied to the police. This paper is a critical analysis of Larry Jetmores book Path of the Warrior, a chronicle of what its like to be a
cop. A Brief Digression about Word Usage The use of the word "warrior" will put some peoples backs up immediately, suggesting as it does sword-wielding Romans going head to
head with the Spartans, or other legendary battles. It also suggests that police work has a sort of mytho-poetic aspect to it; in addition, it sets up an us
vs. them dynamic: the "warriors" with their rippling muscles versus the rest of us sloppy couch potatoes. It also confers an elevated status on the police, because "warriors"
are also seen as the protectors of the state, given special powers by the government in order to keep citizens safe. Such status might lead police to think theyre
better than the civilians they protect-its no wonder Rome had a law forbidding the army to enter the city. The Book While no one seriously considers eliminating law enforcement
officers, few people, outside of the police and their families, seem to like them. Perhaps thats why they turn to one another for almost everything; feeling as they do
that they stand alone and can trust no one except those who live in the same kind of danger they do, day in and day out, they "close ranks" and
learn to rely only on one another. Of course that further alienates them from the community. What Larry Jetmore does in his book is to lay out guidelines for
law enforcement officers, though "the concepts within will be of value to virtually anyone who is on the Warrior Path" (The path of the warrior). This begs the question, what
