that are not ordained by God but commemorate specific events in Jewish history. Purim and Hanukkah are examples. Passover, however, was ordained by God some 1500 years before
Christ was born. It has changed in its form, but not in its remembrance for the Jews. It is the only Jewish celebration that also has direct meaning
for Christians. Origin In a period in the area of 1850 B.C., Josephs brothers sold him into slavery and he was taken to
Egypt. God allowed Joseph to mellow in prison for thirteen years, then caused a series of events that had Joseph not only released from prison but also placed in
an administrative position in which he was second only to Pharaoh. Famine in Canaan brought his brothers to Egypt to buy food; Joseph recognized them and required that they
return with their father Jacob and their youngest brother Benjamin. There was a grand reunion, and Pharaoh invited all of Josephs family - the house of Israel - to
settle in Goshen as guests of Egypt. That Pharaoh died, as did Joseph. The Hebrews history was not preserved, and they became
slaves rather than honored guests. Four hundred years later, God sent Moses to the current Pharaoh with the demand to allow the Hebrews to leave Egypt. By that
time the population was more than a million, and they supplied virtually all of the manual labor in Egypt. Egypt could not afford to lose their labor yet at
