Why is this film so widely popular? When there is a significant amount of controversy about a movie prior to its release, the controversy acts to drive up ticket sales during the first days after its release. The controversy about The Passion of The Christ began months before its scheduled release. Allegations that the film promoted anti-Semitism, that it was excessively violent, that it veered too far from Scripture may have resulted in large audiences during the first few days after its release on Ash Wednesday but the large audiences continued for weeks. Word-of-mouth is the most powerful of all advertising for movies so if the pre-release controversy were just so much hype people would not have continued lining up to see the movie.
