ancient history. Possibly the first mention of these peoples by a western author was that made by the Greek historian Herodotus in his mention of the Pactyan, a people that
modern historians now believe to be the ancestors of the Pashtun. Herodotus relates that the Pactyan lived on the eastern frontier of the Persian Satrapy Arachosia. The Pashtun
were actually the indigenous representatives of early Afghaistan. The distinction between them and other Afghanis occurred artificially with the delineation of the Durand border, the border constructed during the
nineteenth century British occupation of Afghanistan. Both the early history of the Pashtun and the modern history it seems has been largely shaped by outside forces. These people
retain a clear cultural identification even today, however, despite the influence of such forces. In addition to the likely relationship between the Pactyan
and the Pashtun, historians also believe the Bactrian people are related to the Pashtun. Links such as these are made through several means, one of the most prominent being
linguistics. The language a group speaks evolves just as do other aspects of culture and this evolution can sometimes be traced through careful linguistic analysis. The Pashtun language
is a part of the Eastern Iranian language and the people are offshoots of ancient Iranian tribes. Through linguistic analysis, an analysis of the Pashtuns oral history, DNA analysis, and
a diversity of other methods historians have linked the Pashtun with Kandahar and the Sulaiman Mountains where they interacted with Persians. Today the Pashto language is subdivided into a southern
dialect and a norther dialect. Speakers of the southern dialect refer to themselves as Pashtuns while speakers of the northern dialect refer to themselves as Pukhtuns.
