But, at the same time they also bear some resemblance to one another, which does not come as much of a surprise when one understands the relationship between the Greeks and Romans. The following paper examines the two structures, comparing and contrasting various elements. The Pantheon and the Parthenon We begin the discussion with the materials and structure possessed by the two structures. In terms of materials and basic structure we see that with the Pantheon there was a focus on the interior because of architectural knowledge which was intended to shine(The Pantheon, 2004). With the Parthenon the focus was the exterior because the abilities in structural design were perhaps more limited to the Greeks at the time (The Pantheon, 2004). One of the reasons for the focus on the exterior, as it relates to the Greeks, is based on materials. This author notes that, "The focus on the exterior is always seen in Greece because they didnt have the knowledge of architecture to build high ceilings and domes, simply because they didnt have arches and concrete (the Romans invented concrete)" (The Pantheon, 2004). The Pantheon is constructed of concrete while the Parthenon is constructed from marble. Marble, as one can assume, is far more limiting when constructing a building as opposed to concrete which is incredibly versatile. As for the use of the structures, we note that the Pantheon was actually used for many different things, all of which were sacred and religious. In the beginning it was a temple to all of the gods (The Pantheon, 2004). It was also a burial groung and later actually became a Christian church (The Pantheon, 2004).
