unusual is that relatively few women had the opportunity to become educated as she did in terms of her painting. Furthermore, she was actually encouraged to pursue her painting
by her father who was also a painter. The first work she is credited with is a painting which is called Susanna and the Elders (Artemisia Gentileschi, 2002).
This painting depicts "an Old Testament story about a woman surprised at her bath by two community elders, who demand that she sleep with them or die" (Artemisia Gentileschi,
2002). What is interesting to note is that this scene had often been depicted by male artists of the time and typically the scene showed a naked women with
men ogling over her with anticipation (Artemisia Gentileschi, 2002). However, in Artemisias rendition, the woman is attempting to cover herself and is backing away from these two old men
in obvious fear and disgust (Artemisia Gentileschi, 2002). Her reaction is one which can be considered much more realistic in response to
what we would today consider sexual harassment (Artemisia Gentileschi, 2002). The woman in Artemisias picture is obviously terrified as anyone would be if two old men said they were
going to force themselves on someone (Artemisia Gentileschi, 2002). And, it should be noted, that one of the men in the picture is a politician and the other is
a clergyman - supposedly "respectable" men (Artemisia Gentileschi, 2002). The painting itself is actually quite beautiful and again we see Artemisias detail
which her work is noted for. The colors which she chooses are earthy but hardly muted and bring the scene further to life. The details serve to further
