The firm has a strong outsourcing strategy; while the outside world view Nintendo as a games console company, the company themselves view themselves as predominantly a software games company, with the majority of the 3,000 staff employed by the company operating in the research and development department (French, 2008). Once Nintendo was the dominant games and console supplier, but as time when buy with the launch of the Sony Playstations and the entrance of Microsoft into the arena with the XBox the firm had to innovate, This was undertaken in a manner similar to other firms that have also uses a very similar strategy, such as Apple and Nokia (Pontiskoski and Asakawa, 2010). They placed a great deal of research and development, and instead of developing products and then finding a market they sought out the market and asked them what they wanted, which has allowed the firm to find new ways of competing, developing consoles and games that create a more communal aspect to gaming, allowing this to appeal to a market outside of the traditional gaming market, women and families creating an integrated gamihng experience (Pontiskoski and Asakawa, 2010). The ability of Nintendo to undertake this heavy investment in research and development has meant that the firm needs to operate very efficiently to free the resources for the core area of operations.
