key areas are: 1. Phonemic awareness. This is the ability to hear and identify individual sounds, or phonemes, in spoken language. This is a basic foundation for students when learning to read and mastery will limit reading problems in later grades (The New Hampshire Department of Education, 2007). 2. Phonics is about the relationship between letters in written language and the sounds of those same letters when spoken. Systematic phonics instruction teachers children how to delineate phonics elements systematically (The New Hampshire Department of Education, 2007). 3. Fluency is the ability to read with accuracy, expression and speed. Reading frequently helps children learn to read with fluency, which, in turn, improves the childs overall reading ability (The New Hampshire Department of Education, 2007). 4. Vocabulary. A childs vocabulary should be developed constantly. This is the stored information the brain holds about words and their meanings. It should be taught formally and informally (The New Hampshire Department of Education, 2007). 5. Comprehension. This is the reason for reading, to understand what one reads, otherwise, there is no sense in spending the time simply decoding the words. Comprehension can be improved through monitoring, through simple question and answer sessions, using different graphic organizers and through a plethora of other strategies (The New Hampshire Department of Education, 2007). These are the fundamental reading skills all early readers need to know (The New Hampshire Department of Education, 2007; Allington, 2005). It is important to at least review these five pillars before one can understand the importance of the other five.
