blues. The Origins of the Blues Like perhaps any kind of music, the blues could well be argued to have originated long before it became know as the
"blues." For example, one could well argue that the blues originated from tribal songs in Africa, wherein only bits and pieces were remembered by slaves in the United States, and
then whatever was remembered was incorporated into the music of the colonies. However, for the most part it is generally agreed that "The Blues were born in the North Mississippi
Delta following the Civil War. Influenced by African roots, field hollers, ballads, church music and rhythmic dance tunes called jump-ups evolved into a music for a singer who would engage
in call-and-response with his guitar" (A Short Blues History, 2007). The blues was not a kind of music that was recorded when
it came out, nor was it written on paper in musical notation. "[I]t was recorded only by memory, and relayed only live, and in person" (A Short Blues History, 2007).
In many ways, the blues have a very "rich sense of origin" for a variety of reasons (Encyclopedia of Chicago, 2007). \
It seems that anyone delving into the origins of the blues must first see that the people who created this music were slaves. They were not allowed to read, or
learn how to read. They had their families taken apart as husbands and wives were constantly sold away from each other, as were children. Their sense of family and stability
