France and Great Britain quickly became involved (Roberts, 1993). That is the synopsis of a very large war. However, the origin of World War I specifically is still somewhat of a mystery. Everyone knows what happened. However, the fact that a war was seemingly started over an assassination seems to be the substance of fiction. But indeed, it is fact. Yet, the whole story begins in the nineteenth century. Between 1870 and 1914 there had been intensifying nationalistic and imperial rivalries in Europe, which ended with the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serb and that was the beginning of World War I in 1914 ("World History," 1988; Mather, 1996). Indeed, it does seem that the war was something that had been building up. In fact, Remak (1997) seems to blame the failure of European diplomacy during the years in question, between the latter part of the 1800s through the start of the war itself. Other theorists suggest that Berlin sought to exploit the opportunity to rise to world-power status after the assassination (Mather, 1996). Also, Austria was forced into a war against Serbia, and therefore threw down the gauntlet to France and Russia (1996). During World War I, Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia all opposed Germany which was aligned with Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire ("World History," 1988). Eventually, in 1917, the United States would enter the conflict (1988). The role of the U.S.A. essentially contributed to the victory of Great Britain and France in 1918 (1988). Prior to the end of the first world war, the Russian monarchy collapsed, and the Bolsheviks came to power in what was known as the Russian Revolution (1988).
