to put an end to slavery. Still, one could hardly call the 1850s an enlightened era. Even today--while rhetoric about equality is spouted--there are bands of white men who
continue to agree with those from the nations dark past. Still, although one cannot say that there was a stark transition from the previous century, the 1850s were certainly kinder
to slaves than were the 1770s. The Constitution was written in a less enlightened time. At the same time, the problem of prejudice lingers and after Dred Scott, the Civil
War and the Civil Rights movement, there has not yet been a complete transition to total acceptance of the African Americans in the United States. While slavery has effectively ended,
racial prejudice lingers. When delving into the dark past of slavery in the United States, several authors are able to shine light on this despicable practice. There are many misnomers
about slavery which is why it is important to study the subject with the use of credible sources. Degler for example contends that the slaves were really not slaves to
begin with and rather, they were brought to the United States as bonded workers (49). Yet, it was the prejudice that turned the tables and resulted in the institution known
as slavery (49). That is a rather important claim. It just might be the case that technically the Africans were not brought over to become "slaves" but rather, the
practice evolved. Other authors do seem to back up the claim that the institution was not contrived. Still, Degler makes a great deal of charges related to the reasons why
slavery evolved. Obviously, there is some sort of prejudice attached to a lily white nation that had enslaved a multitude of black "immigrants." It seems that racial tensions would arise
