Among the more prominent of the contemporary theorists are Ernest Gellner and Benedict Anderson. Not to be forgotten, however, is the classic work by Ernest Renan. Most theories
on nationalism agree on several basic points. They sometimes diverge, however, on other points. The intent of this paper is to discuss these theorists in relation to one
another. What each of the theorists noted above agree on is that nationalism , the strong belief in country and culture, is in
reality an ideology. It is an ideology which has shaped the face of the world as we see it today. One cultural group after another has risen up
to proclaim themselves a nation in a national liberation movement which has escalated over time. This movement has been particularly progressive in the last two centuries. The explanations
for those movements can vary somewhat significantly according to whom is providing that explanation. To illustrate the point presented above it is appropriate
to first consider the theories of Gellner and Anderson. Both take the modernist approach to explaining nationalism. They contend that in order to understand the emergence and potency
of nationalism we must rely on social communication. That reliance is particularly important when considering the vivid nationalistic changes that have occurred since the beginning of the twentieth century
and with the many varied impacts of World War I and World War II in particular. Although in Western minds the effects of these wars are most often remembered
in term of European countries and the United States, countries from all over the world were affected. Many of the changes which occurred were the result of ethnic-based nationalism.
