few decades ago, it was considered taboo to discuss homosexuality in many cultures, the 21st century has thus far seen a dramatic increase in acceptance of homosexuality, especially when measured
in terms of political progress (for instance, many states in the United States have approved the legality of same-sex marriages). Of course, there is still a great deal of work
to be done in terms of bringing about a full cultural acceptance of sexual configurations and preferences that deviate from what is commonly regarded as a socially acceptable "norm". Nowhere
is this struggle more apparent than in the case of transgendered people. Even as gays and lesbians are beginning to enjoy a more socially progressive cultural climate, transgendered individuals are
still mired in a society that by and large does not understand them, nor from whence their challenge of socially normative gender identity proceeds. This paper will explore the concept
of gender identity as it must be understood in the context of transgendered individuals: as something malleable, constructed, and ultimately a great deal more complex than even the most comprehensive
literature currently suggests. This paragraph helps the student begin to introduce the topic of whether or not gender identity is a matter of "nature" or "nurture". At the core of
most modern debates on gender identity is the question or whether gender is determined purely biologically, by a specific configuration of hormones (i.e. - "nature"), or socially, as a construction
that is learned through interacting with ones culture (i.e. - "nurture"). Even a cursory examination of the issue seems to suggest a certain validity for either side of the debate.
