African American religion has its roots in European-American Christianity and "Arab cultural forms of Islam" (Taking Back Our Gods and Holy Temples, 2002). But,
before one can fully understand the religion of African Americans it is important to establish what is meant by religion: A religion is always, originally, created, organized, and
practiced by a specific racial or ethnic group for its own needs and desires. It is a complete system of faith, and rituals of worship, which is institutionalized within a
society. It encompasses styles of expression of sacred beliefs, observances, and social practices found within a given racial and cultural context (Taking Back Our Gods and Holy Temples, 2002).
History of the African Americans and Their Religion When the slaves were first brought to this country they brought
with them a variety of different religious beliefs and practices which reflected the diversity of their origins (African-American Religion in the Nineteenth Century, 2002). "The majority came from the
west coast of Africa, but even within this area religious traditions varied greatly" (African-American Religion in the Nineteenth Century, 2002). Islam was also quite noticeable within the belief systems
