of a mystery. Everyone knows what happened. However, the fact that a war was seemingly started over an assassination seems to be the substance of fiction. But indeed, it is
fact. Yet, the whole story begins in the nineteenth century. Between 1870 and 1914 there had been intensifying nationalistic and imperial rivalries in Europe, which ended with the assassination of
the Archduke Francis Ferdinand by a Serb and that was the beginning of World War I in 1914 ("World History," 1988; Mather, 1996).
Some suggest that Berlin sought to exploit the opportunity to rise to world-power status after the assassination (Mather, 1996). Also, Austria was forced into a war against Serbia,
and therefore threw down the gauntlet to France and Russia (1996). During World War I, Great Britain, France, Italy, and Russia all opposed Germany which was aligned with Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria,
and the Ottoman Empire ("World History," 1988). Eventually, in 1917, the United States would enter the conflict (1988). Their role essentially contributed to the victory of Great Britain and
France in 1918 (1988).Prior to the end of the first world war, the Russian monarchy collapsed, and the Bolsheviks came to power in what was known as the Russian
Revolution (1988). The war in chronology appears rather matter of fact. Events happened and everyone reads about them and they are simply things

that matter, they will get a glimpse of the human side of war. One author makes this clear with the use of fiction.
