rhetoric goes above their heads. While the Constitution was purportedly written for the people and by the people, a recent survey revealed that one in two Americans do not even
know how many U.S. Senators there are (Jesdanun 32A). One in five do not know that there are three branches of government and a whopping 16% (32A) of Americans believe
that the Constitution declares the official U.S. religion as Christianity. The cliche that ignorance is bliss would suggest that the U.S. population is, for the most part, quite happy.
And in fact, many do not give the roots of the country a second thought. Rather than dwell on the past, many people today are not only apathetic, they prefer
to turn their attention to the mundane activities of everyday life. But hundreds of years ago, everyday life was not bliss. People did need to bear arms for protection. No
one was able to run down to the 7-Eleven for a quick bite to eat. While people can max out credit cards today and bear only minor consequences for not
paying their bills on time, the past held tales of debtors prisons and bloody battles. The United States of America is perhaps the most civilized nation today but it
took awhile to get to the twentieth century. As we head into the twenty first, people continue to fight for the freedoms as did their forefathers. The Constitutional guarantees are
rights that should never be taken for granted. While the document was written more than two hundred years ago, the founding fathers worded the Constitution in such a way
so that it could be applied centuries later. And it has endured. Over the past 200 years or so, the Constitution and Bill of Rights have been amended just 17
