they can have a tremendous impact both. Whether or not viruses are even a life form is a heavily debated topic. Most virologists contend that while viruses quite
likely originate from the genome of living animals, they themselves are not a life form. If we approach the origin of viruses from an evolutionist view, the view that
viruses and other life originated in the thick primordial soup of the pre-biotic seas as a result of an opportune mix of chemicals and perhaps something like a lightening blast,
we can accept the fact that they could quite possibly have originated either independently or as an offshoot of other life forms. What is clear, however, is the fact
that viruses are continuing to evolve today and they do so rapidly and under a wide variety of circumstances. They do so in the same way that they are
believed to have originated, through capitalizing on the genome of their hosts, taking what they need to survive and leaving behind the rest.
Viruses come in two basic forms, RNA viruses and DNA viruses. The differences in these viruses, a part from the genetic material which they carry, is that RNA
viruses are capable of much greater success in evading the immune system of the host. DNA viruses work by forming a double-stranded DNA intermediate by the polymerases of the host
cell. DNA itself is a stable and efficient carrier of information, since the molecule replicates accurately and usually self-corrects any errors which do occur during replication. It can therefore be
seen that mutations are comparatively rare, and when they do take place the DNA molecule has the capability to correct the error.
