by the modern democratic world. In reality, however, the feudalistic systems of the Middle Ages served a particular function in a time period when that function was much needed.
Indeed, it is often said that feudalism was the perfect political system for the Middle Ages. This contention can be supported with just a brief look into the
circumstances which were at play in this time period. The ninth and tenth centuries in Europe were characterized by attacking bands of Vikings,
Magyars, and Muslims, attacks which not only succeeded in terrorizing the Europeans and in disrupting their economy but also in convincing the people that their royal authorities were essentially powerless
to protect them (Spielvogel 203). This recognition ultimately resulted in the people turning to local aristocrats who offered a greater degree of protection to the people of Europe.
When the governments could no longer defend their citizens it became essential that the citizens turn to the powerful lords in their society, lords who in exchange for various services
offered the people the protection they so desperately sought (Spielvogel 203). Spielvogel (203) notes that the resulting contract, that contract:
"sworn between a lord and his subordinates is the basis of a form of social organization that later generations of historians called feudalism"
This arrangement was one of vassalage, a practice derived from Germanic society and one entailing oaths
