which require different methodologies and impact the research outcomes. In determining the optimal design for a research study, one must understand the differences and functions of the designs and
their utility in varied research areas. Descriptive and Correlative A descriptive design (whether correlative or not), can be utilized to obtain current information about a situation, phenomenon
or relative sociological conditions within a situation. Descriptive research can also be utilized to define market trends, economic situations or evaluate data relative to the utility of certain market
changes during a defined period of time (Key, 1997). Generally, descriptive studies utilize one of the following formats: 1. survey studies; 2. interrelationship studies (case studies, causal comparative
studies or correlation studies); or 3. developmental studies (Key, 1997). Correlative studies are a type of descriptive study that demonstrates links between two or more variables based on
the analysis of descriptive data collected. For example, correlative studies can be used to determine whether there is a link between certain factors influencing market pricing (e.g. increased fuel
costs) and the overall use of airline services. These types of studies, then, reflect the impact of a variable on the specific trend or phenomenon, but do not attempt
to measure the extent of the variables impact through a more experimental mode. Descriptive designs are also described as non-experimental. A
non-experimental design is any design that does not require either the use of a subject population or the introduction of an independent variable. In other words, a design that
is based on a response criterion, in which the subject populations are asked simply to state their perspectives through a questionnaire format, is not an experimental design (UNE, 2003).
