opening scene of Sunset Boulevard in detail. Discussion When the film opens, the camera is focused on the sidewalk, then it pans down to the words "SUNSET BLVD." painted on
the curb. From there, the camera tracks backwards down the street as the names of the cast and crew appear, in letters that appear to be stenciled onto the pavement.
After arriving at the mansion that figures prominently in the movie, the camera pans up and looks back down the street to where police cars are racing toward the home,
lights and sirens blaring (Brackett & Wilder, 1950). The voiceover tells us that its about 5 a.m. Because the film is shot in black-and-white, we have no visual clues, such
as colors in the sky, to help us set the time of day, so we have to accept what the narrator tells us-but he has no reason to lie. The
police pull up at the curb and race across the lawn to the swimming pool, where a body is floating, face down. In an extraordinary shot, we see the body
from the bottom of the pool; its a young man, eyes open, "with two shots in his back and one in his stomach" (Brackett & Wilder, 1950). Its the narrator,
who is telling his story from beyond the grave. He says he wants to tell the real story of what happened: "A murder has been reported from one
of those great big houses in the ten thousand block. ... But before you hear it all distorted and blown out of proportion, before those Hollywood columnists get their hands
on it, maybe youd like to hear the facts, the whole truth" (Dirks). From there, the story flashes back six months to the start of the affair between the
