Omelas is a non-Utopian society fully at peace with itself in what it has become. It is to be praised because it has found a way to require sacrifice from only one of its members. 1. Some are oblivious to others misery Most of the citizens of Omelas devote themselves to activities such as beautifying their surroundings, raising children gently and taking full part in community events. They live their lives, aware that all is not well and that they do not live in Utopia, but there is only so much that one person can do... They work - as evidenced by the near-perfection of their surroundings - and they play as reward for their efforts, but most choose not to become involved in the less attractive aspects of life in Omelas. The same scenario plays out in our society. The people of Omelas do not appear to be particularly constrained by the need to make a living, but the fact in our society is that those working typically work hard; those not working are made to feel powerless to do anything at all. The end result is that we tend to our own affairs, doing what has to be done and then relaxing as reward or for regeneration enabling us to repeat the process the next day. We spend time with our children to teach them the lessons they need for life and to encourage them to be more than their parents, nearly always in economic terms.
