As the book title might suggest, The One Minute Manager is a rather simple management system. The people who use the system claim that they feel a great deal less stress, and more joy, in their work and home lives (Blanchard and Johnson 8). The book begins with a story about managers, and goes through a host of theoretical material briefly. That is, as the story emerges, the authors briefly acknowledge the fact that there are a myriad of models in management. The concept of the participative manager is broached for example (Blanchard and Johnson 18). Finally, the One Minute Manger is defined as: "someone who gets good results without taking much time" (Blanchard and Johnson 22). The book is broken down into three secrets, the first of which is the relaying of one-minute goals (Blanchard and Johnson 25). Authors also note that objectivity is an important component of the system (Blanchard and Johnson 28). One minute praisings is the second secret (Blanchard and Johnson 36). Finally, the third secret is one minute reprimands (Blanchard and Johnson 50). Clearly, the author does not mean that someone will only take one minute to complete each task, but rather, each task is simple. In other words, it is not necessary to perform each element within 60 seconds, but the fact that praise or criticism can be offered directly, without a long lecture, is probably preferred by most workers.
