capitol building in Olympia, Washington. Discussion First, its been surprisingly challenging to find useful information on ancient Greek architecture; it should be everywhere and its not. Perhaps people are no
longer as interested in ancient cultures as they once were. However, Witcombe does provide some information on architectural styles. The "Oligarchy" is also known as the "Archaic Period," running from
about 600-480 BCE; at that point, two major architectural styles, Ionic and Doric, evolved (Witcombe). The Doric is the older of the two, but it didnt appear "until after the
Greeks had made full contact with Egypt, which began in 664. . The earliest representation of a Doric capital appears on a Protocorinthian sherd of about 650" (Witcombe). The temple
is the most characteristic building in Greek architecture (Witcombe). Temples of this period are rectangular in shape: Greek Temple plan The Doric style is characterized
by the following: A "simple column shaft with twenty channels or flutes with sharp divisions (arrises) between them, and with three necking grooves near top" (Witcombe). There is a slight
"convex tapering (entasis) from bottom to top" of the column, which has no base, but "stands directly on the stylobate" (Witcombe). The capital of the column has a "swelling,
cushion-like echinus, and a block-shaped slab for an abacus" (Witcombe). The architrave (the surface above the column but beneath the frieze) is an undecorated, continuous and flat surface; and the
