two stories that are very similar, yet incredibly different at the same time. While some of the themes are incredibly reflective of one another, the stories present us with the
themes in different ways. Bearing this in mind the following paper examines the two stories by first presenting four similarities between the two and then discussing four differences in the
stories. Similarity 1 The most predominant theme that is the same in each story is that which deals with nature. Both stories have characters who are at the
mercy of nature, and nature is the ruling force. They cannot deny the power, though they may struggle against it over and over, but they all come to know, if
they didnt know already, that nature will win. The environment which relates to the power of nature within both stories is also the same. Both stories take place in the
ocean, and all characters are certainly at the mercy of that environment which is far more powerful than man. Anyone who has been on a boat upon the ocean will
understand this truth. Man has no power over the ominous reality that is the ocean. And, the ocean, in each story, will dispose of the insignificant men if it sees
fit. In this respect man is of no importance in the face of the sheer power of nature as it is represented by the sea. Similarity 2 In
each story we also have characters who are struggling to survive. In "The Open Boat" these men have been stranded in this small boat and must struggle against all odds
to survive. In "The Old Man and the Sea" we have a simple old man who knows how to struggle, but he struggles all the same as he goes without
