is also a tale of one simple man who is strong and resilient, enjoying the struggles of nature, and the life of a fisherman. In this story we see a man with a streak of bad luck, concerning the catching of fish. He sets out one day, determined to catch a fish, and this he does. The fish is huge and he spends days with this fish, finally winning and dragging it home, although not much is left of the fish. In the following paper we summarize, as well as analyze, Hemingways story. The Old Man and the Sea When we first see Santiago we see that he is one of many fishermen. He is alone in his pursuit of fish, just as the other fishermen are. There are those who help while learning, such as Manolin, but the men, for the most part, are alone in their endeavors. Santiago has gone 84 days without catching a fish. He is considered bad luck at this point, a condition which truly makes him an individual alone, for Manolin must leave him and work for another boat due to the bad luck. But, Santiago is determined. Now, interestingly enough, we have our first taste of Santiago isolation in regards to the boy who would always follow him. We note that Manolin has been required to move to another boat by his father, yet he still remains with Santiago for dinners. In their relationship we note that Santiago is not distressed that Manolin must leave his side on the boat. He is not discouraged, and accepts it as part of his own personal beliefs as well as the beliefs of the culture that is part of the fishermen.
