Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page essay that addresses Homer's ancient Greek epic, the Odyssey, and recounts the adventures of Odysseus who spends ten years trying to reach his home after the victory of the Greeks in the Trojan War. However, this epic does not begin directly with the hero, but rather with Zeus recounting the tale of Aigisthos and Orestes. Zeus' brief reference to this tale makes Homer's point that human beings frequently bring misery upon themselves due to human failings and then blame the gods. As this suggests, the point to Odysseus' extensive travels is that he should learn the lesson of humility and avoid hubris. This is a theme that recurs frequently in Greek literature and, in this case, the teacher of Odysseus are his misfortunes en route to his wife and son in Ithaca. No additional sources cited.

or to recklessness, or to inordinate pride (hubris). One of the main motivating incidents that pertains o this theme is when Odysseus and his crew are taken captive by the
Cyclops Polyphemus. First of all, the men are trapped in Polyphemus cave because Odysseus was reckless in his urge to explore. When Polyphemus becomes aware that these men are trapped
in his cave, Odysseus appeals to him to honor their rights as travelers and consider them to be guests. Polyphemus responds by eating two of the men. Odysseus wisely does
not tell Polyphemus his name, rather indicating to the Cyclops that his name is "Nobody." When Polyphemus friends respond to his cries of pain when Odysseus succeeds in blinding him,
the Cyclops responds to their questions by saying that "Nobodys killing me now by fraud and by force" (line 455, p. 224). This caused Polyphemus peers to think that he
was merely making a joke and they do not come to his aid. This tactic demonstrates Odysseus cleverness and cunning, which were qualities valued by Greek culture. If Odysseus
