From the original tale presented by Homer to the more recent film version, directed by Joel Coen, the theme of disguise and timing is of incredible importance. And, in all of the versions we find many cases where timing, as it involves disguises, is crucial in determining whether the final outcome is successful. In the following paper we examine how the difference between a wise and a foolish decision is often found in discerning when to conceal and when to reveal in terms of disguises. The versions of the tale discussed are "The Odyssey" by Homer, the film "The Odyssey" directed by Konchalovsky, and the film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" directed by Joel Coen. The Odyssey by Homer While there are many instances where we see disguises in the Homers "The Odyssey" the most important plot line which involves a disguise is that which involves Odysseus decision to remain in disguise when pursuing the suitors of his wife. Odysseus has traveled a great distance, and spent a great deal of years, coming home only to find that his wife has been pursued by many suitors, suitors who have also taken it upon themselves to nearly depletes the food sources of his household. The suitors have taken it upon themselves to essentially use Odysseus home as though it was their own, killing livestock and helping themselves to the splendor of Odysseus wealth. When Odysseus returns home and sees this he is in disguise and chooses to remain in disguise until the right moment. He wants to put an end to the activities of the suitors and essentially kill them, ridding his realm of their presence. If he were to have entered into the midst of the suitors without a disguise ...
