a list of the very specific jobs that occur through the process of controlling and extinguishing fires, including everything from selecting the nozzle type to administering first aid (DOT).
The job description also outlines the basic equipment utilized, including, but not limited to: fire trucks, nozzles and hoses, axes, chisels crowbars, electric saws, core cutters, first aid equipment,
and sometimes marine fire equipment (DOT). In addition, firefighters often utilize other technology, including equipment that can help firefighters communicate, see through smoke, and provide geographical tracking.
The education or training for firefighters varies considerably, depending on the fire department. In the past, firefighters were hired without any specific education or training, after demonstrating work
experience with similar backgrounds or in volunteer fire departments in small towns. In recent years, expanding technology has led to the development of courses of study in fire science.
Currently, a number of community colleges and state universities offer fire science degrees, specifically courses of study in Fire Science Technology, that leads to an Associate of Applied Science
Degree. For most fire departments, the minimum required education is a high school diploma, with the passage of a written entrance examination as a part of the interview process.
Entrance examinations and assessments of physical ability and medical competency are required as a part of the interview process (U.S. Department of Labor). After being hired, many newly
