would be one of convenience. In many ways, although one could argue that underneath there may be love, women are viewed as objects in the novel entitled The American. Of
course, at the time, it was not unusual for women to be exchanged almost as objects as alliances through marriage are formed. Many would think that such a thing is
antiquated. How can families do this? One only has to look at modern times to see that rich people marry other rich people. When Paris Hilton was briefly engaged to
her namesake for a brief time, it turns out that his family had more money than hers. It is unthinkable for someone with such a background to marry someone outside
of the upper class community. An example also comes from the television series Gilmore Girls. While Lorelei is engaged to a common man, who owns a business and does well
by most standards, she comes from a very wealthy family. Her mother plots to form alliances with other rich people by trying to push her towards men who come from
these rich families. There is a sense that like marries like and that the money must be kept within the family. Although mail order brides is a phenomenon where money
is exchanged for beauty, by and large and in this book, it seems that money can be aligned with other money. That said, beauty does take center stage when it
