In the United Kingdom, greater dependence on the role of nurses, both in public health institutions and community health venues, has led to shortage of nurses in a number of urban settings. In the curative model, nurses provide assessments, act as integral members of healthcare teams, provide direct and indirect patient care, and address central issues for patients, including patient advocacy and multicultural perspectives. There are a number of distinct functions of a nurse in the care of individuals, and these are based in the belief that nursing is a profession integrates a high degree of technical skill, requiring both direct and indirect care services. Nurses provide direct and indirect patient services on a variety of levels, from disease prevention and restoring measures to determining that patients are cared for in a safe manner. Nurses are also advocate for patient needs, and act as liaisons between patients and physicians, often communicating observed signs of illness and promoting greater care through this type of team approach. Central to this role is the integration of protocols for the safe care and administration of health care within the curative model, and determines the call for compliance with standardized procedures, health codes, and licensing requirements, all of which have been initiated to support a level of professionalism in nursing. Though nurses will always provide a basic level of care for patients that extends across views of family, culture or the health care environment, it is evident that the emerging view of holistic medicine and nursing care and the development of a transcultural view of the patient are inherent in the emerging nature of nursing protocols.
