The Nukuk-Maktu tribe of the Colombian Amazon is one of the last remaining hunter-gathering societies that still observe their traditional lifeways. Largely nomadic,
the tribe roams the Amazon with their poison-tipped darts hunting for monkeys and scouring the forest for edible and medicinal berries, roots, bark and other resources. Few have historically
ventured outside the pristine habitat have enjoyed in the Amazon. Recent developments, however, have disrupted these people and even forced some to venture into the modern world.
The reasons that the Nukuk-Maktu have remained largely isolated in their Amazonian paradise all the way into the twenty first century is that their whole
tradition evolved in this paradise. They learned to feed, clothe, house and tend to the other needs of their families using only what was provided by nature. They
have learned not just what plants and animals offer food but also which offer medicine to tend what used to be their infrequent ailments. Demographically they lived in small
bands whose size was determined by the amount of resources that could be obtained in their geographical range. Women and men lived side by side but had largely different
pursuits. Women were the primary caregivers and responsible for much of the gathering part of the groups subsistence. The men, in turn, were the hunters.
