those in desperate straights? Of course, many wealthy people are somewhat altruistic, giving money to their churches and donating food baskets to the needy during the holidays, but a fundamental
question arises. Are these gestures truly enough? Should people be able to live in luxury while others starve to death? On a broader scale, one must look country to country,
at the rich Northern states and at the poorer, developing nations often located to the South. While children in the North go to bed with full tummies--sometimes to the sound
of Sally Strutherss voice blaring from one of many television sets, asking for a hand out--their Southern counterparts go to bed not knowing what the next day will bring. Many
of these children do not have shoes, adequate clothing, clean water and medications, which are things most youngsters in the United States take for granted. As the North-South chasm
widens, other questions crop up. While the Northern nations cannot completely bear the burden of its Southern neighbors, certainly it can help to some extent. A question that plagues developed
countries is whether or not the North should help with the eradication of diseases. After all, if the North helps the South fight disease through low-cost distribution of medicines, the
entire world would be better off and the people who suffer in such countries would of course be helped. But while that position seems to be one that is
popular, there is another side to the story. In looking at the position that does support aid to the South there are many examples, and these often
