for many years; the current nuclear crisis is not the first (Pike, 2005). The problems of the desire of North Korea to develop and possess nuclear weapons and the difficulties
faced by the international community in seeking to resolve their singular determination were seen between February 1993 and June 1994 when the country threatened to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty and when economic sanctions where threatened North Korea stated they would interpret it as an act of war (Pike, 2005). However, there were some agreements that forestalled the crisis
at that time, but the ambitions of North Korea were not halted. This may be seen as the foundation of the current crisis, but with a country that
has moved forward significantly in their development of nuclear weapons. US intelligence sources appear to believe that North Korea had already one or two nuclear devices by 2003 (Robertson, 2003).
Donald Rumsfeld, the US Secretary of Defense, made a statement that gave an even greater estimate back in 2001 when he said "North Korea possessed enough plutonium to produce two
to three, maybe even four to five nuclear warheads" (quoted Niksch, 2003). The facilities in the country are also leading to the ability to add to these resources, the Yonbyon
facility in North Korea was estimated at having sufficient resources and capacity to create weapons grade plutonium within a period of only four months and then within another two months
use this to create between four and six atomic bombs (Robertson, 2003). The weapons are of concerns due to the ranges, the Nadong weapons have a range of 1500 Km,
