Nine year old Mei Leung was the first identified victim of Richard Ramirez, the serial killer the media ultimately dubbed
"Night Stalker". The case of the so-called "Night Stalker" became one of the most lengthy and complex in US history. Diligently, however, investigators collected the evidence and used
the technology they had at hand to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Ramirez was indeed a killer. He was ultimately convicted to death in Californias gas chamber.
Ramirez, however, has yet to be executed and there are even those that attempt to excuse his actions on the basis that he had a rough start in life.
While there are always exceptions, murders can often be characterized according to the specific type of murder they commit. This characterization is based,
in part, on the way the murderer physically takes his or her victims life. It is also based, however, on factors such as the number of victims, the time
elapsed between victims when there are multiple victims, the location or locations of the murders, and the reasons the murderer chooses his or her victims.
