is a painting that surely speaks of the human condition and a work that offers the viewer a great deal of information to digest. In the following paper we examine
this particular painting. The paper discusses his perceptions of the painting, as told to his brother in a letter, and also discusses techniques, color, lighting, and perspective among other things.
The Night Cafe in Arles According to the student requiring this examination, Van Gogh once wrote to his brother about this particular painting, stating that "With red and
green I have tried to render the terrible passions of humanity." At first glance we may not see this, but we do see the power of the red and green
that Van Gogh presented within the painting. And, with such an understanding of Van Goghs perception we can truly begin to understand the power of the red and the green,
and other elements within the painting, which speak of the "terrible passions of humanity." Much of the page is comprised of wood colors, of the tone of pine, simple and
pure. But, the red is introduced halfway up the walls and carries up to the ceiling, where the vivid green is present. The red and then the green, become incredibly
obvious against the pine and earth tones. This seems to be the case due to the fact that the chairs are the same color as the flooring and half the
walls. None of the people within the painting have extraordinary colors within their clothing, the pool table is the same color as the flooring and the chairs, and even the
